I badly wanted to listen to the Rethms at Absolute Phase.
http://www.rethm.com/
The catch was that is tucked away in Prithvi’s drawing room. It has been at least a year since I had last heard them and I had almost forgotten the sound. Every time I land up at Absolute Phase, he says the tube amp needs atleast an hour of warm up so we used to just get on with other stuff.
He has been telling me that he had picked up a Used Unison Research 6 Tube integrated recently. It uses 6 EL34 ‘s and generates enough heat to keep a big room warm in a chilly afternoon in Iceland………just kidding but quite hot enough to scald your hand if you keep them on the top plate after an hour of play.

He set it all up on Saturday and called me for a listen. The Rethm Magic has to be heard to be believed. This single driver full range speaker can do some stuff that most other speakers can’t do. The coherency and feeling of “ Being there “ and Absence of typical “ Hifi artifacts” is astounding. Takes a while to get used to it though. We are so used to natural sound in our day to day life but the moment we switch on a hifi system, we tend to expect something different. We expect a certain amount of “ Hifi artifacts” to excite us. It is like a switch is turned in our brain too in addition to the switches on our hifi systems. I guess years of hearing artificial hifi-sound has spoiled our ears and brains too. The Unison research 6 with the Rethms was an awesome combination and the result was just astounding. All equipment vanished and natural music remained. Now I want to listen to the Sadhana which has an active integrated bass module which will add that last octave that is missing in the Rethms. I am sure the Sadhanas will do a fantastic job with music like classic rock. Imagine the coherency of single full range driver with a carefully integrated bass module handling that bottom octave. We sat and listened to some five cds which included jazz, Hindustani classical, western classical. Very few systems move me like these do. One fine example is a very different setup with Siva of corrson. The Plinius + Reimyo + Diy transport, valve preamp and speakers. Different approach but extremely successful.

Another Saturday afternoon with an overload of good music… Wanted to share this with the forum members what we Indians can achieve if we put our mind to it. Looks like Jacob George is doing some good installations abroad. Looks like they are appreciating our effort better than us Indians.

It is good to learn newer things. The concept is to always keep your mind open.
