Unshielded speaker placement

How much distance should there be between unshielded speakers and the television as to not mess up the tv picture. I am using a pair of vintage Pioneer CS-77A speakers for the front sound for my home theater system.

my fronts are unshielded and have placed them around 1 m away from the TV and have not experienced any problems whatsoever..

Dear Jimmy,

What Sachi said was correct !

If you wish to further fine tune the same & your TV has got a "Degauss" option. You could bring the speakers one at a time until distortion of the colour takes place on the screen ( images will look strange with colour patches appearing on the screen)...then if you could move it slightly away till the distortion disappears, activate the "Degauss" option, & you are good to go !

What the optimum distance is..... varies from speaker to speaker as the magnetic flux generated by the speaker magnet would differ from driver to driver.

what junia says is absolutely correct....was going to give you the same advice junia beat me to the trigger....:-)

1+ meter should generally be OK but it all depends on your speaker....mine are unshielded too and mine are 2 feet away and the tv picture is just fine.....

Can the degauss feature be kept on permanently? Does it have any side effects? I have it turned on for my computer monitor.

Degauss as a "feature" can be permanently on, but degauss "effect" cannot be permanently on. Let me explain - degauss is a feature by which everytime TV/monitor is switched on (or degauss button pressed) it creates a high AC magnetic field for a few seconds duration that clears out any residual magnetic distortion. When degauss is operating for the few seconds the picture would be distorted due to the high magnetic field - so it cannot be permanent. By switching on degauss feature permenently on your comp I think all that you are actually doing is instructing it to degauss everytime it is turned on.

Thanks a ton Ravi. You have set my mind at rest. I never notice the distortion effect on my monitor anyway because it must be degaussing before starting up windows.

BTW why do manufacturers use unshielded drivers when shielded drivers are also available in the market? Are they cheaper or possessing some other advantage?

You are right, its too quick to notice during normal startup - all you will hear is a pop sound. Some monitors have a degauss-now menu that can be activated manually.

Dont know about the tradeoffs for shielded drivers - I guess its probably the additional cost involved for the high-u shield material. I dont think shielding would affect speaker performance.
