Dear All, I'm sure everyone here has heard equipment with big brand names as well as equipments by enthusiasts like Viren, Siva( I call them Enthusiastic brands for convenience as calling them small brands is not fair and no justice done to their intellectual contribution to audio). And lastly not to forget the lonely enjoyers, who swear by DIY, So go ahead and vote but put your point of view in words too... [Beitrag von SUB_BOSS am 16. Aug 2007, 13:42 bearbeitet] |

I have voted #3 which is not 100% true because I do have some unknown brand equips too :). I do go in for brands and expect some reliability and service from them or dealer. If there are any #1 voters, I am sure that they will be the happiest of the lot ![]() We all have our own reasons for the way we act... freedom of expression.... regards Anil |

I don’t care whether the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice! For me Sound quality comes first followed by affordability and serviceability. Big brands do have certain advantages like resale value, better / custom components, better designs and certain ‘feel good’ factor. But at the same time be prepared for exorbitant prices and poor (or non existing) after sales support. Cadence is a big brand for me but I am auditioning Viren's 36 W valve amp along with Cadence VA1 and if Viren 's product sounds good over VA1; I will go with Viren. Last month I auditioned Advance Acoustic CDP at my place. This French brand has stunning looks and decent performance and this all at an affordable price(just 32K), But the product failed half dozen times during the brief test! Here the question of but reliability and service support comes into picture, Okay , it could be just that particular piece only but I really don’t want to take any chances. DIY is strictly a NO – NO for me as long as audio is concerned. There are many things beyond technical knowledge and soldering skills that go into making a professional grade product. French SS electronics seems to be pretty prone to an indifferent quality control. suprisingly most tube equipment manufacturers are different. |

cannot resist brinnging it up but ![]() -some cats need very little milk to catch mice while others need to be really well fed before even an attempt, while still others need constant prodding -some cats catch not just your mice but your neighbours as well ! -Some cats play around with the mice before eating them while others go Wham-Bam an so on whats the purpose of this post ...none really! the thought just popped up and I have an easy day at office ![]() ![]() |

For me brand name is important as much as sound coz it makes life lot easier : 1. To match components, thanks to google with lots of information on equipment matching by users. 2. Service. 3. Procure spares 4. Finally sell them. I assume it's tough to sell equipment made by small timers. |

I always feel technology used by small manufacturers is not upto mark as big brands spend lots of money on reserach which is way beyond the reach of small ones. To also add that most small brands use parts from DIY bin in small quantities and this adds upto price,So for me it's brand only. ![]() |

I may have a slightly different point of view; If we site the example of Speakers. The 3 top speaker maker's in the world are JM Labs / B & W / Dynaudio [debatable, but I will not tread down that road for the time being]. What they make at the top end of their product line is in no manner comparable to what the smaller guys do; say Rockport Technologies, Avalon Acoustics, Marten Design etc. My point being, the 'big brands' have very nice QC [Quality Control] and 'organised' production runs, hence, they can do 70 to 80 % [in sound terms] of what the smaller guys can do, but at very very cheap price points. Basically, the B & W's flagship speaker - 800 D has a list price of US $'s 20/- K [I may be wrong], but it costs them less than 3,500/- to 4,000/- to make & they sell it to their distributor for 8,000/- for a pair. Now no small or medium sized manufacturer can even dream of achieving price points even remotely close to this price. I will comment on the technology in another post !! |

2. I want big brands as well as good sound. 4. Sound Quality is paramount and big or enthusiastic brands are irrelevant. I am in a delama; Do not know what to vote for ?? |

Hi Bhagwan, My point was small time brands cannot conduct research on all counts like big brands spend to experiment new stuff( I guess super tweeters tecnology, composite materials for drivers etc). Big players have plenty reserves and can plough back into R&D whereas small brands can mostly scrape from DIY bin. |

Some of the great inventions are simple solutions provided by individuals or small groups. Regarding access to exotic material and devices, most of the drivers are available to small manufacturers, may be at slightly higher cost. More important is how well the small operator knows what exactly his needs are....say how to specify the drivers. If one knows what he wants I am sure that he can come out with wonderful speakers ![]() This way round the advantage of mega budget research can trickle down to small business too. Regards Anil |
