An evening at Viren's

I happened to be in Delhi for a meeting on Monday and I was able to hop across to Viren's place and audition his 'labour of love'.

The gear on hand was as follows;

Source :NAD 520 CDP
Amplification :Lync valve pre
Power Amp :Valve mono blocs (50 WPC )
Speakers :Sequel 2 way floor standers
Cable :DIY

We spent around 2 1/2 hours listening to a variety of music, ranging from the urban blues of Clarence Gatemouth Brown to Pink Floyd and some Amjad Ali Khan thrown in for good measure.

Viren is an unabashed fan of valves.Indeed he makes a passionate case for them on his site

I, unfortunately do not possess a sufficiently critical pair of ears to be able to break up the sound I heard into it's individual components, so I will try and describe the 'whole' of it.

Voluptious and warm are the words that immediately come to mind.The system is transparent to the source, but without being clinical.The music presented by the system,I thought, was more about the integrated wholeness of musicality than the detail of individual parts.

The bass was a real surprise.Very,very tight.I personally would have preferred a little more depth and body, but that's my personal preference ;).In fact as Viren will tell you, he has 'sacrificed' bass focus on the highs and mid- range

Lyrita I think has been specifically'voiced'for music like Jazz,blues,Classical,classic rock.

I would have personally liked to audition the valve pre along with the SS monoblocks. Unfortunately Viren did not have a pair of SS monoblocks handy,perhaps at another time.

This might sound like an unabashed plug, and it is. IMHO,people like Viren deserve wider recognition.

What is most gratifying about people like Viren, is that this is not merely about business, but about a passion.

And Viren has a mission, and that is to demistify quality HiFi and make it more affordable to the common man.

His entry level valve int,f'rinstance costs a mere 10 K.

I too felt the same when I listened to his system at Arjeet’s place. The system’s ability to communicate music and involve the listener is what amazed me. For this kind of money, I don’t think you can do better…….

Manek, is there no place in Mumbai that stocks Lyrita? I'd love to hear what "budget tubes" sound like. 10k for a tube amp? WOW!!

If I remember right Roshan on this forum was to buy lyrita or he was to audition lyrita tube preamp...or maybe it was someone else and I am mistaken ?????

Hi guys,

Sorry, you will have to wait just a little bit longer to audition Lyrita Audio equipment in Mumbai.

I am still committed to selling equipment direct to the customer, to keep prices at a reasonable level. That means you get to audition equipment only at a customer's place, or else, in Delhi!

Satyam, in Mumbai, has just ordered a pair of Reference Monoblock valve amplifiers - that will be delivered in two week's time. Give him some time to set up ....

Roshan has the Integre integrated valve amplifier, but it is giving him some trouble. I will have to look at it.

That's about it in Mumbai so far.

Guy,

I'm impatiently waiting for the Ref Mono's to arrive at my place will surely write a detailed review on it after using it for a while I have very high hopes with this amp as viren is confident that it will better my Jadis Defy7, also on my request he’s installing a switch for me switch for Triode and Pentode operation.

You guys are welcome to audition it here in Mumbai at my place once I have it up and running.

One thing is for sure. There is at most times little correlation between price and quality. Everything in life is ultimately based on some form of opportunity cost. I think Viren has done more than justice here. His products are probably the best that I have heard in relation to the price.

When are you calling us for a listening session, I am yet to hear a good valve setup. Square_wave was telling that you have a TT setup as well, Man I really want to check out your system. Let me know when you are free.
