The Times AV show was worth every minute of the 4.5 hrs that I spent there. The only sad thing was that I did not meet any of our members, but considering the crowds company would not have been feasible. I of course focused on the stereo systems and avoided the home theatres. Though I had my ears drilled into by a Sanen system selling for 17,500. The excess treble at high volumes was outright horrible. The high-end system from Sanen was worth it though. They seem to have got there act together at that price point. The highlights for me were: 1. Avant Garde trio (3 horns) backed by Bryston amps and Nagra tubes. This was great high-end sound with fantastic clarity and superb dynamics. No signs of any kind of distortion or boom-tizz. But the sound wasn't really warm so it might not appeal to all tastes. (I tested my with Ray Charles CD - Diana Krall and Natalie Cole) 2. Cadence Arista with VA1 valve amp. Great sound. Much more warmth than the Avant Garde. But then that's the valve sound. There was a fantastic record player which was compared to a CD player. On Hotel California, the record player certainly sounded more mellow. (I tested my with Ray Charles CD - Diana Krall and Natalie Cole) 3. Gamut system: all components This was a place I went to relax. The guy had a great collection of CDs so I didn't care to use my Ray Charles here. I found this system good at whatever it played and it relaxed me so the sound had that subjective beauty. 4. Energy floorstanders. I liked these too. These speakers are well worth if one can't afford any of the premium options mentioned above. Sounded good on jazz. (I tested my with Ray Charles CD - Diana Krall and Natalie Cole) 5. Sonodyne's slim aluminium floorstander and pre-power amp combo. This produced great sound with the only drawback that the sound was thin compared to a full-range floorstander. The decoder - 6 channel power amp combo also exploited this new flrs well. I would like to check out the Sonodyne amps as they certainly sounded good and powerful. Maybe they could provide some good competition to foreign amps in the entry to mid-level segment. Unfortunately, I missed the Manger and the Mirage. Next time, I will spend the entire day at the show. The only way to do some justice to the wealth of stuff available. As someone mentioned, the rooms did not bring out the best in the speakers. But what can expect out of a hastily setup hotel room? All in all, a great exhibition ![]() |

I'm very happy for Hermit (sp??) Audio (Khushroo) I loved the sound, its how a good system sounds and was a damm good benchmark for the show. 1.The CD-Player did soo many things right it got all the details out without being harsh absolutely smooth the only place one wound realize that’s its a cd not vinyl is when the cd had corrupt info in the pits and would distort on very few cd's infact I heard it only on one cd. 2. The amp and pre had fantastic synergy they played sooo smooth just got out of your way, the same goes for the speakers they weren’t transparent or neutral but what sound ![]() Regards, Satyam. |

The CD Player was from France - Metronome Technology - T1A MK II Signature [Transport] & C1A MK II Signature [DAC]. The Pre Amplifier was from Jadis [France]. There was 1 more AG set up in the entrance area - Avant Garde - UNO - This was being driven by Bryston Pre & Power Amplifiers. The CD Player was from Audio Aero. All Cables were from Cardas in both set ups. In case of Cadence - my comments were mentioned earlier. The TT was good - SME 20 + Audio Research Phono + VA1 Amp + Siltech Cables + Cadence Avita Speakers. THe speakers are great - have a lot of potential, but the set up was not done well. The AG's & Cadence Avitas were both driven by Tube Amplifiers [this is for Neutral's comment]. Did you hear the Energy Speakers with Cambridge or Primare or with McCormack ? They had 3 set ups !! Please do comment on this; I liked the Primare CD & AMP. Very good product. BTW you did not miss anything - The Manger room was rather poor & Mirage was a bit Bass heavy, but a good set up for any person that is not a hard core Audiophile ! I too liked the Show. Well Done - Times AV Group. I do hope that the one in Hyderabad in Jan, 2006 by AV Max is as good if not better. BHAGWAN69 |

Hi ! I may be wrong; However, I think I heard the SACD 5.1 Surround in the Riviera Room [Mirage]. The set up was not good, but at least some one was making the effort to demo. I listened to Diana Krall. Even in the LaKozy Room on the Ground Floor, there was a PSB Platinum HT set up. Not done idealy, but could be watched. So there wer options, but as you rightly mentioned, it was not up to the mark. A lot more could have been done. I remember, 2 years back, in the AVI room, there was a Digital Projection Set up done, that was brilliant. It is still there in my mind. It was at one of the Shows, I do not remember which one. Avantgardes with Bryston is not a great idea and Nagra is no better , but for the Jadis Pre amp. Am sure they would have been sounded more on the "hard" side.. I prefered the Unos to both Duos and the Trios (TOOO space consuming) I even liked the SOlos a lot ..just that they are fully active They sound amazing with tube/ Class A amps.. and with a Sun Audio amp they are on my dream system list BTW the Metronome CDP is reallly good but really Ex as well |

I remember asking the Cadence guy as to how he setup his system. Whether he used any testing equipment. He replied that he just used his ears. I'm really sorry re what was paired with the Energy flrs. No one gave written handouts on what components were being used and I guess I was too lazy to carry a notepad and make notes. I did listen to the PSB setup in Lakozy's ground flr room. It was effective at HT. But without playing music, can't really comment on its stereo capabilities. |
