1. Any reason why you have singled out GRADO ?

Have you heard them ?

The Look, feel and Most Importantly, the Sound of the Grados is Quite unlike Most other brands.

You will either LOVE them or HATE them.

Make sure its not the latter, when making yr 1st headphone purchase....

2. What do you intend using them with ? ( eg iPod, Main system, etc )

hi amp_nut,
i am an undergrad student therefore i cannot expect my father to invest in a good set of speakers so i decided the best compromise i could do was to save up for a good pair of audiophile headphones.
about your questions-->My opinions on GRADO are totally based on reviews i've read on the internet and in forums like head-fi. Almost all of them seem to think it is the best pair of headphones(SR60)) in that price bracket which provides sound comparable to standards set by audiophiles.but after your comment i searched and found that all the reviews are quite old.and also the moderator of head-fi is a GRado fan boy. I haven't heard grado but i have heard a sennheiser(dunno the model name) at prasad studios when i interned there and i loved them.It was only after that i realized that headphones could be that great too.

About the looks I really don't mind if they look old fashioned or ugly as some ppl call it bcos i'll be using it only in my home.I'll be mainly listening to music and i love details in my music and i listen to a wide range of genres.

if you auggest i hear them before buying where can i do so??

i'll be using the headphone connected to my computer.it doesn't hv a sound card but i was planning to couple it with
a chumoy amplifier which i tht i could make myself.

right now im open minded and im basically looking for a headphone that stands at the entry level to great audiophile sound.i can save upto 5K.im willing to take in any suggestions u might have. thnx in advance.

I know there are Headphone buffs on this forum, and some GRADO fans too.

Anyone in Chennai who can offer him a listen ?

I have not heard the SR60. I however own the SR80 and am very happy with them. I guess I fall under the LOVE EM catagory.

I use it with the MF XCAN V3 Headphone Amp and a Marantz CD Player. I also use it with my IPOD and get great results though the IPOD cannot drive it at high volumes.

However they are not very portable so I find my Senn PX100 good vfm with IPODs and Discman.

I got mine directly from the Net a year ago.

Instead of the SR60, I'd say spend 30$ more and get the Alessandro MS-1 (again built by grado). Its 99$ shipped to India. Having heard the SR60, SR80, SR225 and MS-1, I can wholeheartedly say the alessandro is better than both the SR60 and SR80.

You can get one here. They have free shipping to india.

You might wanna get the grado bowl pads from ttvj.com for an additional 15$. Helps improve the sound quite a bit.

These cans are quite easy to drive. I'd suggest spending first on improving your source before spending on a headphone amp. Even a Soundblaster live 24bit costing 1300-1400 rupees in the market will be a significant improvement over onboard audio.

Hey guys,

I'm still searching for my first pair of audiophile cans and have zeroed in on SR60. I have heard them and feel that they suit my primary taste in music (rock/prog).

I am now looking for a pair that can work well with both my system and iPod. Would the iPod be able to drive SR60 without amplification? Does anybody have experience of using them with portable players?

I also have an option of AKG K26P which work very well with iPods, any opinions on these?

guess there's also another more fundamental question that needs an answer, is it justified to look for a single solution for ur system and portable?

The AKGs are meant for portables (like Senn PX100). U can get them online for about $40.

Abhi, any place in Bangalore, where one can get Sennheiser headphones?

Probably would be cheaper to get it through someone coming from US, but was wondering about the price difference in getting it in India. Sennheiser opened their Indian subsidiary in Feb this year, I think.

Sandip,

Senns are available via apple stores. There's one in the Forum. Only a few models are available though and are marked up quite a bit.

Hi Sandip,
Just contact the Senn dealer in Delhi. Here I know one guy who keeps some useless models and priced exorbitantly so its better you contact the Delhi guy and you can directly compare his prices to the US price. The difference shouldnt be more than 25-30% else its getting expensive.

Getting one from US, especially if you browse through head-fi, you see many people selling off their cans, getting one of those would be nice and VFM.

2300 should be the approx. cost of the PX 100. That is how much it would come to including shipping.

I got it at that price in Pune some 8 months ago.
3700 is way too high.
