Hi Manek,
I visited an Onkyo dealer's audition room recently. He gave me the Onkyo catalog. It has two two-channel receivers the Tx-8511 and the Tx-8211. My queries are:
a) Other than having an inbuilt tuner, how is a receiver different from an amp?
b) I have not seen these mentioned in the forum. Are they brand new or are they under some other classification in the forum?

The dealer also mentioned that Onkyo has an entry level amp A9211B. However it is not mentioned in the catalog. Does it mean that the amp is taken out of production?

Hi,

1) Stereo recievers are amps with a radio reciever.
2) The onkyo anmps may not be used by many on the forum hece no details about the same.

The A9211B, may not figure on their brochures as the brochures may be old or selling this amp is not a priority. Ask for a specsheet for the said amp.

Manek.

Hi Bibs,

I have a Onkyo TX8211 receiver. Manek has told you the difference. The A9211B is there but it does not seem to sell at all, since nowadays no one really goes to Onkyo for their 2 channel stuff. Onkyo sells pure audio mainly to institutional buyers and often hook up multiple 5.1 sub sat systems for the same purpose. I am saying so because I being an architect have had quite a few such experiences. I have been using TX8211 for the last 4 years or so. Both the 8211 and the 8511 are old models, so is the 9211. They did not sell the 9211 earlier here but now are probably doing so. It is almost a clone in terms of the amplifier section specs to the 8211.

i use an onkyo HT receiver ..i found it clean on the treble and a bit light on the bass.

I would rate the denon or the Marantz better for stereo though and it might do you well to listen to them as well.

Onkyos main market appears to be HT at least as represented by the media.

Thanks Angshuman and Arj.

I checked up NAD,Yamaha,Sony,Onkyo and Sonodyne. Except for the last three, the other brands do not have company service backup. As I'm looking at a longterm solution, that matters.

Anghshuman, You did not mention how U rate the Onkyo sound. How's the build quality and customer support?
Which are the speakers you are using with the receiver? Please mention the price too.

You mentioned that they hook up their audio systems for institutional buyers. I have seen Sonodyne (Landmark at Forum mall ) but never noticed Onkyo systems at Bangalore. Know any place in Bangalore where its put?

hi Bibs,
Check out Planet Fashion and Pizza Hut in FORUM Mall Bangalore...they have Onkyo system hooked up.
IMO Sonodynes are much cleaner sounding.

i had recent audition at Hyd at USK
Marantz with Mordant short
I vote to Marantz for its musicality rather than onkyo...
even the Denon is good but its more on the movie side than the HT..

but when it comes to true audiophile music i prefer to use the standalone amp and pre

Hi Bibs,

Well I am using a NAD C541i as source and Acoustic Energy AE105SE as the speakers. Well I agree with the fact that it is a bit low on bass and clean with the treble. There is a small button on the receiver called STC which stands for Selective tone control. That button seems to elevate the bass and treble to new levels, sometimes out of the clean range especially if you hear with your ears below woofer level. Onkyo has a typical far eastern sound, very much HT I would say, sacrifices on the mids quite a bit. Then on I had bought it for 16800 including all taxes in Delhi. Have not needd to go for service but a couple of my friends who have had to have had no problems in Delhi. As far as their installations go, all Pizza Huts and KFC have Onkyo installations. They use a sub and sat setup there, no full range speakers. That is why the Sonodyne sounds much better as rightly pointed out. My speakers I really like, they cover up for the amp quite a bit. It has a beautiful tonal quality especially for the vocals and good depth. Do listen to complete systems, pair them with each other and then decide and carry the music type that you listen too. I know and respect the fact that a good setup should be good, whatever, but still, I have never liked Hip Hop on a La Jolida and ES Panel speakers.

Hi Angshuman,
Thanks for all the information. Here the speakers that are available are Wharfedales,Polks,Space and Sony within my budget. The Onkyo dealer can connect it to a Sony as he's a dealer for Sony too. The Polk is in the next showroom, so I may be able to listen to that pairing too.
When I called up recently, the dealer told me that the A9211 is out of stock. So only the 8211 is available. I may visit him tomorrow if time permits.
Thanks,
Bibs
P.S. Where did U get Ur speakers? Are they bookshelves or floorstanders? How much do they cost?

Dear Bibs,

I sincerely recommend that you try Arasu's speakers before going any further.
Retail around the same price as the wharfedale Diamond 8.4 and the sonodyne 2605.
however, i found Arasu's speakers to be far far superior.

here's a pic ..

Hi Bibs, I bought my whole system in Delhi. The speakers are floorstanders, and then about 4 years back had cost me 35k all taxes paid. I was a newbie to the industry then. But in the last four years have really come to see that enthusiasts here in our very own country make equally good if not better stuff. So I would agree to Sabya, do look at Arasu's stuff and maybe you could take Ben's/Arasu's help in fabricating some speakers for yourself.

Thanks Savya sachi and Angshuman,
I hadn't budgeted so much for the speakers. I'll think about it.

Hi guys,
Found time to listen to the Onkyo Tx-8211 and the Sony MF-550 yesterday. I took my own CDs along as suggested by many of the threads.
I am impressed. The Bass felt adequate for my tastes, better than Yamaha AX396 and the Sony STR-DE-497.
The only reservations are a very basic remote ( not even speaker A/B)and no binding posts for the speaker wires.

I read on some forums that the tuner performance is not good.
What is Ur observation on that Angshuman?

I got some advice to go in for the Sony MF-650s instead of the 550s. So I'm checking out that part.

Hi guys,
I got my MF650s. I haven't bought the Tx-8211 receiver yet.
The Yamaha AX496/ AX497 is available around the same price.

Could some Yamaha amp user give me some info on the amp.

I enquired in a separate topic but did not get any replies.

Is it that there are no users of this amp?

Thanks,
Bibs
