An interesting link that's being discussed on ecoustics. Would be interesting to know forum members' views!

The best ESL 57 I have ever heard was in 1996 in UK, with the now defunct Beam Echo amplifiers. The owner must have spent a lifetime with Quads and I will tell you why in a bit.See these speakers are excellent in every way, except the bass(so what else is new?).This dude placed the speakers on some squarish brick work like a well, about 1.5 feet high, in a manner such that the rear radiation fired into this well.It produced bass that the Quad had no right to.It must have done a solid,I mean solid,40-45Hz seemlessly,no colouration, no sub required. It sounded complete in every manner possible on classical music.I was much younger,so I felt nervous to ask him what he had done,a decision I regret,as I would have learnt something I may never get a chance to learn ever.

Deaf, how would you rate the ESL 57s to the newer models?

Also I found this guy's article to be rather incomplete. An article with such a title is plain wrong without talking about the associated equipment!

Yes it is incomplete and no comments on sound, depth, staging or lest the dynamics,,huh
Shahrukh don't take me wrong but looks like he has written this with lone intention to shoot up online prices for the vintage rattlers he might wish to sell in future.

1. Why should I take you wrong?
2. I agree with u quite a bit. Posted this thread so we can see what the foriegn press (besides our good ol' stereophile, HFC et al) is up to. And debate/snigger/discuss/snub/appreciate this guys article

I never got any piece of information except that Quad's had a good naming nomenclature.. . But Shahrukh don't you feel press is a bigger culprit than anybody in audio sales chain

The ESL 57 is a speaker that will find itself limited by the standards acheived today, regardless of what any reviewer says, because if he felt so why not use it as his reference?I believe the latest model is very good. However speakers like the Manger can give electrostatics a run for their money.Open baffles like the Jamo 909 are now doing certain things which were the exclusive domain of things like the Quad. They both have similar ratings in the German audio press.

Sub: Yes press does influence... It's rather elementary psychology actually... you know a certain reviewer has great acclaim for a product and you "train" your ears to thinking they're good Pschoacoustics in a way I guess the more mature you become, the more you learn to take reviews with a pinch (read handful) of salt.

Deaf. This is why I posted the article. It's quite recent. The guy seems to rave on about these ESLs. It's like he's found audio heaven. Like sub said earlier... the bugger seems to have been paid by Quad. A lil somethin extra for the weekend... you know...

Actually, now that I think about it, it sounds like quite a lucrative piece of work for me

I dont think there will EVER be a Unanimous decision on these matters... and Thank God For That !

I feel it shows a certain level of immaturity to even SUGGEST the idea...

Huh ever seen a UK mag with good reviews for US stuff?

Stereophile also biases it's reviews for US products.

We blame AV Max who are poor souls , but these biggies sure

are rampant in making money by writing good reviews and I

also heard they get lots of free bies too.

I too want to be a reviewer for Hifi mag and get goodies free.

The art to read through a reviewer's words takes years of going through audio mags.Nowadays nationalities apart, one never will know what a reviewers connections with distis and importers are, which will influence reviews.

Agree totally. One man’s food is another man’s poison. The more I get to know about audio, the more I am wary of reviews. The best system for anybody is what does the job for him with his kinda music. Even if you feel a “ certain product” achieves all the “ audiophile attributes”, there will always be a bunch of guys who won’t think much of it…. On top of that, with all the “mag politics” going on, it makes it more confusing for the newbie.
