By just finalising two or three brands is a killer crime...listen to most of them in your budget, may be you might end up liking something else..so you shorten the list by practical listening.... never ever shorten your list by listening to people..i know it's easy to just name a few.

happened to chance on this forum, amybe a bit late, but nevertheless, Stereo listening is just great on the marantz 5400. The direct mode just sounds so clean and pure. For movies I use dpl2 or dts, the effects are great but volume should be kept a wee bit higher. For starters you can always go for 2 speaker setup, but then you will have to setup the amp for only 2 spkrs,very easy.

Home theatre or audio? What’s the deal? How do I know what’s good for one is also good for the other ?

Answer) Yes, actually this is a basic question, made complicated by sellers of equipment, who with the advent of home theatre, now have the opportunity to sell more speakers, specialized center speakers, power subwoofers, dipole surrounds etc…and really, really confuse you and complicate your life. The bottom line is no speaker or amp knows what signal is being played, its job is to reproduce the signal. If it reproduces one – it will reproduce the other. For sure, a speaker that sounds good on music, will sound good on home theatre, all you have to be certain about is that it has the required full-range power handling for your room – that’s all!

At Lithos, we realize that most clients actually listen to music 80-90% of the time the system is on. The remainder is for theatre. Within this, maybe (depending on the movie) 25-50% of this time is devoted to special effects and other movie sounds. The remaining is once again for dialogue and simple speech and effect reproduction. Yet, home theatre demos in typical showrooms are all about special effects. But do you really know, whether the bass is sounding boomy or correct when that t-rex is walking around, or is that really how an earthquake is supposed to sound. What about a bullet shot? How many of you have really heard any of these effects in real life?? But surely you know how a piano sounds – or what the sound of a guitar is mostly like – and the voice of your favorite singer. That’s why; the best evaluation is with music – where you have familiar evaluation cues. Kick back your favorite rock/pop/jazz track and let the sound sink in. Of course, we will throw in an occasional effect or two… but we know, that’s not what evaluation is all about. So, get ready to listen to music at a Lithos listening room. That’s the only way you’ll be sure.

I just noticed that the Lithos Acoustics website got infected with a VBS script virus, Redlof.A. You will automatically get the virus downloaded on to your computer's cache (IE/Mozilla) when you open Lithos web-pages. I telephoned and informed Rajiv D'Souza. He is already aware of the problem, and said they are working at removing it.

In case you plan to visit their website, first update your computer's antivirus protection.

the sonodyne option in other threads on this forum has sparked my interest there... my listening preference will be 70:30 in favour of music.. looking at buying 2.1 spkr and upgrading to HT over 1 /2 yrs. Hence looking at an amp i will not need to replace and at the same time provide grt listening for music.. looking fwd to ur suggestions.. thanks

I think 'Refex Acoustics' on G N Chetty Road, T Nagar deal with Marantz. They are sub dealers or something to
sharada motors ltd.

My two paisa advise is to get ur AVR from Singapore if u have someone there, or atleast ask some one who may visit there shortly to get it for u. AVRs retail 50 to 60% cheaper than what these guys in India are charging u.

If u want to go for a cheaper option on AMPS (stereo or otherwise) go to Seelayamman koil st, off Ritchie st.There are some shops who deal in used goods got from Singapore.If u r lucky u can get a good stereo amp for 3-4 k.Try a shop called Guiness there.

U can also visit Torvin speaker shop on the same street. They have some variants of amps and as well as speaker combos.Torvin seem to command a decent opinion in this forum.They have a HT audition room too.

I visited reflex acoustics.. and further down u have "audio people" opp. the hexaware building.

They were quoting 40K for the Marantz and i just turned back... mebbe will get a demo there and check out all their stuff

I used to spend my initial months in IT distribution in Ritchie street...I checked out the Torvin store.. their audition room was also quite good...(the cinebels was better) but i loved the butt kicker...the sales guy was very helpful.. they had the yamaha.. but didnt like it.. sounded too bunched up wen listening to music on the torvin speakers.. surrounds were ok.. i mean u cant tell any major diff.. effects were all there..

theres a guy in Poona who says he will deliver marantz 4600 for 22K approx... dunno if its actually too good to be true..!!!!!
