output of an AVR

Hi everyone,

just want to know. is there any difference in the power output of an AVR when it is played in stereo or surround mode?

for eg. in stereo mode the rated output is 100 w/c and in surround mode it becomes 70 w/c.

If, ( usually to keep costs down ) the Power supply is not strong enough, the AVR will deliver a higher power with only 2 channels driven, than with Both channels driven.

Similarly, for a stereo amplifier, if the Power supply is not strong enough, it will deliver a higher power with only 1 channel driven, than with Both channels driven.

Thanks for that reply.

I will be buying an avr next month. could you suggest out of the following three options which one will be better.

1. Yamaha RX-V457 6.1 (20K) / RX-V459 6.1 (how much ??)
2. Onkyo TX-SR503 7.1 (23k)
3. Denon AVR-1706 7.1 (28K)

Also if you could tell if the problem which i posted exists in any of these systems.

This will help me in making a sound decision.

My vote goes to Onkyo..service is easier and you get a fairly good AVR 7.1 at a good price and even cheaper if you bargain a little more...

Denon is a the best and 1706 is a very good model. You could also consider Marantz 4400..very good for stereo too.
Haqve you tried Harman Kardon??

i think marantz is above 25K. considering my budget of 25K max i cannot afford that much.

No i havent tried HK and i dont know if there are any dealers of HK here in Delhi.

Denon 1706 is pretty good and I guess it has auto speaker calibration feature. If you are interested in pre-amp out you may check out Denon 1906.

just got a quote ( grey )

denon 1706- 19.5
denon 1906- 22 ( hear this model has complaints)
marantz 4600-22k
yamaha 557-21k
yamaha 659-27k (ipod integration, 7.1- guess this one has been covered in av max this time)

According to you how safe it is buying from the grey market. I think it will be a gamble. Do they come in box packing (without papers for sure) ?

Do you have any address/numbers in delhi from where i can get these without papers. I know one dealer - Trinity sound & vision its in Greater Kailash - 1. he had quoted me 21K for Denon 1706.

I had read reviews of all the 4 avr in this months edition of AVmax. Between Yamaha & H/K, i liked the H/K. considering the price the H/K is more VFM.
