Great News !

I just got back 62 of the SACD's. from Munich this summer.

I recommend the recording. Musical content is a bit of an 'acquired taste' if you know what I mean.
Recording is top notch !!!!

You are correct, I spend about 2 to 3 hours a day with music. Still very very difficult to go through & remember what I have heard.
Later, what I may have liked, I have to listen to 'attentively' & that really tires me out.

Space is always a constraint. I have mentioned in many of my earlier posts the most expensive part of being an audiophile is the real estate. I go through hell in classifing and keeping my music. It is really a chore.

I may tend to disagree, it is always about the 'will to spend' !!!! Where in your list of 'priorities' does audio fit ? That will decide what you spend on it !!!

BTW - Software is way way more expensive as compared to hard ware.
Also true for computers, unfortunately [or fortunately] most Indians buy their software as pirated copies, so it comes free, but if one has to buy a 'liscensed' copy, the software cost is much much more than a computers cost !!!

Arithmetic: 1 CD = 700MB = 0.7GB
1000CDs = 700GB
3 320GB hard disks = 960GB
It will all fit! Perfect convenience forever.

You are assuming that the cost of the medium is the major cost.

No ! Its the content.

The CD already provided "too Much" capacity, since most 2 LP albums could fit on a single CD, so the opportunity to charge more, vanished.

The SACD and DVD audio already have HUGE capacities, and not everyone would be willing to pay 10x if 10 albums were put on the same disc.

As far as material costs go, the price dirrerence between a Rs 40 CD and a Rs 400 CD is ZERO

And audiophile formats ... like SACD and DVD-Audio, the companies already have burned their fingers. Nobody wanted to pay more for them, or even wanted them .... NOT EVEN THE AUDIOPHILES, who should have encouraged the efforts.

On the contrary, Audiophiles took pot shots at the mediums, ( often without a fair conmparision ) and ran them to the ground, praising low res CD instead

I am not considering the cost of the media really. What I was considering was our convenience.

For eg. I feel like playing a Menuhin sometimes and at other times I may prefer a Norah or a Minoru Nojima. It's so nice for me, if I have all their works in one place. I may listen to music for upto 5 hrs at a stretch. It's plain irritating to have to search out and change the CDs every half hour.

However, I agree that record companies place their profits above all else - I read that a top female jazz artiste was paid $3000 and no royalties for an album that sold several lakhs.

So frankly, they couldn't care less for us folks!

So, I reiterate, be practical and copy your albums (which you must have spent lakhs on) onto some hard disks so that you can easily enjoy the fruits of your money. Using RAID, hard disks can be very reliable and with 2-sided DVD writers easily available, your data safety is assured.

Cost will be negligible. A computer does take some time to start up, but this can be reduced by dedicating it to audio and not installing other resource-hogging software on it.

I too wish audiophiles were 'scientists', who would use hard data and double-blinded testing before stating their 'godly' opinions. It would have resulted in considerable upgradation by manufacturers, and a lot less of 'snake oil'. I agree that the new formats, especially SACD, are far superior to CDs if mastered correctly. Frankly, it's not a matter of opinion, they store so much more data that higher fidelity is certain. Much as your CDs would thrash someone's cheapo MP3s. But, as hybrid SACDs would also play on CD players, I am not sure why the technology has been sidelined.

Maybe, no easy money for record companies.

I think we guys have to actively shift our purchasing away from these record companies towards artiste websites and collectives that give their artistes a fair deal. We like the artistes right, not some greedy blood-sucking scamsters.

Neutral, I am with you on that. a HD transport is ideal in many ways. Jitter would be at minimum..although i would prefer a separate disk/pc combination (a used laptop can be had for 25K as a dedicated music server..which is less than most good transports!)

but i would still prefer an external dedicated DAC to do the conversion to analogue duties.

sorry to awaken an old thread...u can try the squeezebox network media hub and stream the files from the PC via a network....u can use the flac format which which is a lossless compression format...
