You bet this is going to be construed as racist. Try going to the "Jazzmatazz" shows and you will be confronted by the ever so famous parsi sena and then you can explain to them your writings ! You may find a pin very nicely placed on your seat to prove a "Point", a few bugs that bite to make you uncomfortable thru the concert. So there ! Now coming back to the concert, 3 days of jazz at the ncpa is a big thing for ncpa. A good auditorium for this kind of music. Have fun guys ! Regards Manek |

Thanx Krish, that was an interesting video of the story of jazz in India. I saw the names of restaurants that all look very familiar from my growing years in BOM such as Gaylord. It's sad that the classic jazz sound is not no so alive & well anymore in BOM - these old geezers play really well & their sounds are that of classic Jazz. ![]() |

Legend has it that in the late fifties, if you were to walk down from Marine Drive towards Churchgate, on a late Saturday evening, you would be treated to the sounds of Jazz wafting through restaurants like the talk of town, Bombellis etc. Not any more. That day and time is long gone. RIP |

Krish Its a god given fact. My parents talk about this vibrant jazz scene in bombay with very fond memories, especially my dad. they were part of it at churchgate. My dad would have heard most of the great old timers of jazz in mumbai live. He sure was praises for them. A few excellent piano players, sadly no international exposure. Parental units would party hard and dance to the music till dawn(remember in those times jazz was dance music too - swing at its swingiest) on friday and saturday nights, have breakfast at Pyrkes(at fountain) at 5.30 am and come home with the milkman, really and not as a figure of speech ! ...And other stories of how movie the "benny goodman story" brought the house down 4 times a day and 5 times on sunday. Jiver's would go to shows in the theaters and jive in the ailes during a show ! That's mad ! A city full of music and fun. Look at it now....... When I hear those stories I am so enamored and a bit jealous. they were living in a great musical era, had the time, the inclination and the energy to enjoy it to the fullest. Lucky ducks ! Manek |

Day 1 The opening act on the first day was the Carlton Kitto Quintet. What a disappointment. The sound was terrible. It reminded me of my first Lo-Fi set up - Cosmic. Fortunately the next act, The John Faddis Quartet was an entirely different story. What a class act! and they played for over 2 hours, with Mr Faddis who is quite a stand up, cracking up the audience with jokes and one liners. The music was Deeeeeeeeeeeeeevine.(Manek, you would have loved it).John Faddis is right up there with the Trumpet Greats - Miles,Dizzy,Freddie Hubbard...last night's performace was a testimony to that. To hear an artist, a band of this caliber is a privilage! Wife and I walked out feelin' buzzed and blessed. BTW tickets are still available and they are a fraction of what one ends up spending on an IC or a Shakti Stone or stuff like that. If Jazz be your thing, please, please come for this festival. An aside on sound The sound quality was terrible. The sound engineer looked like a veteran of Falguni Pathaks, Dandia Nights. Why o why, when we are blessed with acts like John Faddis, must we go and screw it up with Bad Sound ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Not sure.... Did the kitto 5 play badly or the sound was bad or both ? Btw, was it in the symphony hall or at the smaller semi circular venue ? If the latter why did they ever need a sound system at all except for probably the electric/bass guitar ? And that too the guitar amps would have sufficed. Any vocals ? Hey ! That may have been the local dadya scene's ace sound engineer ! Have some respect ! :-) Manek [Beitrag von Manek am 15. Okt 2011, 11:24 bearbeitet] |

Day 2 Steve Turre Ensemble, Three ladies of the Blues & The Cedar Walton trio = 5.5 hours of Music from The Jazz Heaven. The Jazzmatazz seems to be all about American Jazz, especially the Wynton Marselis school of 'Classical' Jazz. I have never heard Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Ellington, Oscar Peterson, the Great T Monk live.Yesterday, I got a taste of what it would have sounded like, live. Manek the sound yesterday was very, very good> Looks like they managed to sort it out.The programme is at the main venue - Tata Theatre. Looking forward to tonite! |
