Verdi's 'Don Carlo'

A production from the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, of Verdi's tragic love story set 16th-century Spain. Verdi's Don Carlo is one of his very greatest operas. It it is a tragedy that superimposes the love story of Don Carlos, heir to the Spanish throne, and the French Elizabeth de Valois onto the stormy political and religious affairs of the time. Verdi creates six great character portraits including Don Carlos's father, King Philip II, the prince's great friend Rodrigo and the Grand Inquisitor, one of the darkest of all operatic roles. The Royal Opera has assembled a superb cast led by star tenor Rolando Villazon in the title role with Marina Poplavskaya as Elizabeth de Valois. Dimitri Tiliakos sings the part of Rodrigo and the hugely-experienced bass Ferruccio Furlanetto is the deeply troubled King. Nicholas Hytner has directed the Schiller play that provides the basis of the story and brings that experience to bear on his work in the opera-house.

Donizetti, La Fille du Regiment

Dawn French introduces and plays a cameo role in this broadcast of Donizetti's great comic opera.

Staged to extraordinary acclaim at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, early in 2007, the flamboyant production stars Natalie Dessay as the orphan Marie who is found and adopted by a regiment, and Juan Diego Florez as Tonio, a local boy who joins the regiment to be close to Marie when he falls in love with her. Felicity Palmer plays the Marquise de Berkenfield, who arrives searching for Marie, supposedly her niece, claiming that she is due to inherit a fortune. Marie reluctantly leaves the regiment and becomes engaged to the son of the Duchess of Crakentorp (Dawn French). However, Marie is desperately unhappy and is overjoyed when her beloved Tonio arrives with the regiment. Will true love conquer all for Marie and Tonio? [S]

Busonis "Doktor Faust"

"Die Absicht, und noch mehr die Sehnsucht, Goethes ‚Faust' mit Musik auszustatten, hatte mich dringend erfüllt. Allein die Ehrfurcht vor der übermächtigen Aufgabe verhalf mir zur Entsagung." Doch schließlich siegte die Sehnsucht über die Ehrfurcht: "Wie in einem Fieber" warf Ferruccio Busoni innerhalb von sechs Tagen die erste Textfassung seines "Doktor Faust" auf das Papier.

Die Oper erlebt ihre Münchner Erstaufführung in der Inszenierung von Nicolas Brieger. Die musikalische Leitung hat der junge tschechische Dirigent Tomas Netopil. In der Titelpartie singt der Bariton Wolfgang Koch - er gibt damit sein sein Debüt an der Bayerischen Staatsoper -, an seiner Seite verkörpert John Daszak den Mephistopheles.

Das Künstlerdrama, dessen Komposition Busoni bis zu seinem Tod 1924 beschäftigte, eröffnet die Münchner Opernfestspiele 2008 und als Live-Übertragung aus dem Nationaltheater zugleich die diesjährige Festspielzeit in Bayern 4 Klassik.

The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra is joined by vocal soloists and St. Patrick's Cathedral Choir and the Palestrina Choir. Featured composers include Messiaen, Poulenc and Fauré. The soloist in Poulenc's Organ Concerto is Thomas Trotter.
