Inside instead of Outside!

I have noticed that in practically all speakers drivers are mounted on the outside of the baffle (closer to the listener) and flush to the baffle with screws and / or nuts.

However, on my friend's DIY speaker, the drivers are mounted on the inside of the baffle with screws. In other words, they are recessed by the width of the baffle, around 18mm. I told my friend that the sound engineer has mounted the drivers wrongly. I added that this would affected the sound quality due to edge diffraction and corraling of the tweeter's dispersion pattern.

Was what I said correct from a technical point of view? Is this mounting pattern irrational or is there some benefit from this style of mounting?

If I am not mistaken...Krish's speakers are mounted in sort of the same way......right Krish ?
Now if Linn does it, there has to be a method behind the madness....but I wonder if your friends speaker maker had the same reasons for doing it ?

Linn? Wow! I thought that my friend's speaker maker was just plain nutty or clueless.

Hi,

I have a pair of speakers, Rogers Studio One, where the woofer is mounted from inside the baffle. But, only the woofer; the tweeters are mounted conventionally, recessed into the front of the baffle. However, the cabinet edge in front of the woofer is rounded off to avoid edge diffraction as far as possible.

Diffraction is a problem with high frequencies, when wavelengths become comparable in length to cabinet dimensions. If the woofer is going to be rolled off by a crossover way before that, it should make no difference whether it is mounted from inside or outside. But I would never do an inside mounting to a midrange or tweeter driver (unless it's shaped like a horn!).

My friend bought a Proton D540 40W/ch stereo amp last night from Bangalore forum member Nietzche. So his speakers sprang to life. They sound great! simply great! I couldn't believe my ears - they are 25 years old speakers with a 12" Philips driver and a 3" Bolton tweeter and use a simple first order Bolton crossover.

Classical music and Diana Krall simply sounded wonderful. It's as if the singers and instrumentalists were really there. The cabinets are massive, maybe around 70 litres in volume. They are ported - but the front port is fairly small as it is blocked by a wooden sieve reducing its effective width. The bass is tight and goes really low - no boom at all. Might not compete with the best new flrs, but for their age, they sure rock

Viren,
the room is small (150 sq ft) and listeners have to sit just in front of the massive speakers. So, I guess that while edge diffraction is certainly there, it will not be so apparent to a person within a 20 degree angle from the front. The waves from a 12" woofer should be long enough to escape unscathed.

My take is that large enclosures rock - it's just that they take too much space and are way too heavy.

Its great that your friend enjoys the speakers so much, and its very true the size of the cabinet as well as its construction still matters.
Age should certainly be of not much consideration if the results are so good-not every new development represents progress-look at the way the chorus over tubes is swelling.
In some thread there was a discussion over whether mono souns more full & complete than stereo...
The way things are going , we might soon have to dust off and reinstall granfathers Murphy Radio !
