I have a stereo setup consisting of NAD amplifier with Kef speakers. I use my system for both music as well as movies. I am looking for a new player and trying to decide between a dedicated CD player or a DVD player. I am willing to compromise a bit on the audio but not so much that there would be a noticeable difference to an average listener. What would be a better choice (standalone CD or a DVD player) considering models available in India (around Rs. 15K)? Would DVD players at this price range have a decent audio output? Any suggested models with indicative prices? Raj |

onkyo 501 seems to have a good cd playback. denon players also do decent cd playback. I heard them but wa snot impressed much. Nothing to beat a dedicated CD player. What you probably could do is get a dedicated CDP for 15k(nad 521bee) and buy a pioneer 366 for about 4k as a dvd player which actually is quite good for the price. This way you stretch your budget by 4k but get two good pieces of equipment. manek. |

Thanks Manek. I will check out the NAD player. As an alternative,if I reduce the budget to about Rs. 10K what would be the options for a DVD player with decent audio? Raj |

Well. What manek mentioned above is very true. If you want a DVD player which does 2 channel audion very well., it would cost Much More than a dedicated cdp and separate dvdP and still not provide all tat much beter. Another option you could think of would be to get a Separate DAC (Digital Analog Converter) and use the DVD P as a plain transport. you would get better benefits there |

raj...check out the nad cdp...also check out the onkyo 501 and the denon. First see if the cd reproduction of the onkyo or denon matches your expectations. If it does then go for the dvd player. You first need to know how good or bad a standard dvd player will sound playing cd stereo and then adjust your budget accordingly. The lower you go in your budget the lower the quality in sound. The LG's, samsung, philips etc available are somehow terrible with cd playback. Arj's idea of an external dac is good provided you get cheap dacs. Currently I only know of one person who deals in external dacs, audio note, mahendra dave at oceanic sound in pune. This audio note dac sells for 56k. Too much for you budget currently. manek. manek. |

Raj, I have a Teac CDP and Pioneer DVD sparingly used for last 2 months and am planning to upgrade my CDP (at least). Would you be interested ? I bought them for 12 K. I'm based at Delhi. Sanjay |

Sanjay Thanks but I would not be going for the Teac player. Would be interested in a NAD cd player/ equivalent or DVD player if anyone is selling. I am in Mumbai. Raj |

Raj, You are on the right track - go for NAD C521BEE. I'm planning to upgrade to the same. Luckily my dealer has agreed to take back the Teac CDP. Sanjay |
