Completely agree with you panditr....he was at his best those years.....and that's what my dad says too....his phrasing skills were at their best, his voice a bit smokier from all those ciggy's, I sure envy the people who heard him live during this part of his life.
But not to forget nelson riddle and his band that backed him up so well for so many years. Love nelson riddle.

And he sings so easy no? with jobim ? It was like telling a story to music.....And ella coming in with body and soul ? So damn moving...that is one great dvd !

Sadly I don't have any of the ratpack dvd's :-(

If you have the 70th bday concert, they brought in sammy davis and dean martin to perform.

Do you have the concert for the americas held in an amphitheater ? Probably the best rendition of "something" (that beatles song) I ever heard. He also sang the all time fav "strangers in the night" live at the concert, something he says he had never done before. His rendition of "yesterday" is awesome too !

Arjun,
Funny thing is that this one was just a spur-of-the-moment pick up at Planet M during a casual stroll. I liked his “don’t worry” and I like Chick Corea. But the album turned out to be a gem.
Will check out the “Hush” album.

I got another one too:
Lovely big band sound here:

Hi Krish,

The first time I heard the Concierto D'Aranjuez was in the movie "Brassed Off". ( It's called the concert of orange juice, jokingly!). It was the second movement, if I remember right.
Some time back, there was a magazine called "Gentleman". It had a collector's issue on western music. It listed Rodrigo as the only twentieth century composer comparable to the greats.

I understand that the original composition was for guitar. Is the version you're listening to on guitar?

Most of last week Mrs ak07 and I been nursing pre summer flu and staying home. And what better way than spinning some vinyl to while away this otherwise most unproductive week.

Since missus wanted a trip back to the days, out came Carpenter - The Singles: 1969–1973. Nice hummable music. It always helped with the babes if you knew your Carpenters well.

Followed up by Simon & Garfunkel - Sound of Silence (Columbia 9269) and The Concert in Central Park (2 LP set Warner 2BSK 3654 UK pressing)

Then onto Bee Gees - Spirits Having Flown. I resisted the temptation to bring out the 2 LP Saturday Nigh Fever. Too many embarrassing memories associated with that album while trying to act John Travolta at our club dances back in the days.

Jimi Hendrix – Are You Experienced (Polydor India pressing) with its maniacal guitar riffs. And Eric Clapton - Just One Night double LP. I am happy the way my little EL84 amp has been handling this type of music. And The Beatles St Peppers Lonely Hearts Club band (EMI India pressing)

Late last night some interesting Russian LPs starting with The Leningrad Dixieland Jazz Band performing cover version of all time great swing hits. This is a mid 70’s pressing brought by a relative who was in USSR at the time. Great recording and music.

All in all memorable time. I remember the period when buying these music was kind of a ritual. One LP a month. I miss the experience of visiting those small shops where “English” LPs would be staked in the corner and you could actually listen to the disk before deciding to shell out Rs. 50. Good fun actually!

I too had the Saturday night fever LP long back. They were quite some knee twisters eh…? I used to know some moves for the “you should be dancing”. It was pure “disco “and a “soundtrack” for an era if I am not mistaken

Charmaine was always the song mantovani was most associated with and is beautifully rendered.

But my favoirite on this album is 'around the world". That song I think was his best. Greensleeves is another all time fav.

Btw....do you have an album called "the mantovani touch" ?

I SHOULD meet up with you more often !

Also.. what is the "SHM-CD"?

In simple words, I consider it another audiophile label, but the formal description is :

The high quality SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) format features enhanced audio quality through the use of a special polycarbonate plastic. Using a process developed by JVC and Universal Music Japan discovered through the joint companies' research into LCD display manufacturing, SHM-CDs feature improved transparency on the data side of the disc, allowing for more accurate reading of CD data by the CD player laser head. SHM-CD format CDs are fully compatible with standard CD players.

This is what positivefeedback had to say :

http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue39/shmcd.htm

SHM-CD: New and improved CD format from Japan!
by Robert H. Levi

SHM-CD, or Super High Material CD, is an improved version of the Compact Disc material that uses super quality, enhanced transparency polycarbonate material developed for use in LCD screens. They will play in any CD player. Universal Music Japan and JVC co-developed the SHM-CD. They report that the new material allows the pits to be formed more precisely plus eliminates laser splatter. The signal characteristics are improved as a result with overall lower distortion and better musicality. Universal Japan is reissuing a ton of albums in their catalog in all genres as SHM-CDs

Eastwind Imports sent me a two disc Jazz Sampler with one CD made of regular aluminum and the other an SHM-CD. Made from the same masters (newly re-mastered in Japan without any use of equalizers or compressors) and pressed with the same stamper, they sound very different. Taken from the vast catalog of Universal which includes Verve and Impulse labels, each CD contains 13 famous jazz numbers recorded in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The artists include John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, and Anita O'Day.

I first listened to the regular CD supplied, focusing on Stan Getz/Joao Gilberto "Corcovado." It sounded quite smooth and focused with very good definition and depth. I then played the Verve 20 Bit CD Reissue from 1997 which sounded a tad brighter, but that’s about it. I then listened to the SACD Verve Reissue from 2002 on my ModWright 9100 with tube power supply …it was improved in every way. It was SACD of course, but it had substantially more definition and air …better depth, too. It was then I played the SHM-CD of this cut. Oh boy, it sounds like the SACD!

What? How could this be? A CD formulation that actually works? I tried the SHM-CD on all my CD sources: ModWright Sony 9100, 999, E.A.R. Acute Tube CD Player, and Alesis Masterlink. I heard improvement on ALL players with the SHM-CD versus the regular editions.

I heard more definition, more air, smoother textures and nuances, a lot more depth, reduced digititus of all types, more of an analog sound and feel, bigger dynamics micro and macro …the whole ball of wax

Actually, from the above, a downloaded CD ( wav format) should not present any improvement.

However, the RUMOURS : Fleetwood Mac (SHM-CD) sounds superb to my ears... like a different recording.

I would happily give you a CDR, but I know, wont play on your spinner...

Why not drop by at my place, with your German pressing of RUMOURS, and we take a comparitive listen ?

I do hold your opinion in high regard...
